ROXANA GILMORE SPOONER


1831 - November 22 - Roxana Gilmore was born in Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio.  Married Alden Bradford Spooner, July 18, 1848.  Gave birth to 7 children: Roxana, Sept.17, 1849, New York (died April 1856); Alden Bradford II, Sept.9, 1851, Loraine, Ohio; Nettie M., Sept 4, 1857, Loraine Ohio; David R., Jan.30, 1860, Oregon; Elizabeth E., Feb.18, 1864, Crescent City, Calif.; Cornelius G., Jan 15, 1866, Morro Calif; Edmund L., Jan 7, 1869, Morro Calif.

1868 - The Spooner Family took possession of 150 acres of government land 3 miles up Torro Creek.

1875 - A.B. Spooner I purchased the Stocking and Williams store in Morro - remodeled it into a home and boarding house/store.

1877 - After her husband's death, Roxana and her children continued operating the boarding house and store.  Eventually she left the store and moved in with son, David R. and his family in Morro.  When David and his family moved out of the county, she moved in with son A. B. II, who owned and operated the Pecho Ranch.

Roxana was an accomplished musician.  She played the piano, sang and gave piano lessons.  She enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives with her musical talents. 

1898 - Roxana died on December 19th at the Pecho Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.

1898 - December 20th - (San Luis Obispo Tribune) "In the death of Mrs. Spooner, San Luis Obispo County loses one of its most noble pioneer women, one who in the earlier days as in the later years, lived a life, the influence of which was always for the ennobling and elevation of those with whom she came in contact."
